Hildred Buikema, 93, of Fulton, IL, died Friday, October 24, 2014, at her home.
Hildred was born January 19, 1921, in Ustick Township, IL, to Claus and Kate (Eissens) Huizenga. She was educated in the Ustick and Fairhaven Townships grade schools. Hildred married Walter Buikema on December 30, 1941, in Fulton. He died December 11, 1989. She and her late husband, Walter, farmed in the rural Ustick, Chadwick, and Thomson, IL, areas from 1941 to 1978 They retired to live in Fulton. She was employed at Climco Coils in Morrison, IL, from 1966 to 1983.
Hildred was a lifelong member of Spring Valley Reformed Church in rural Fulton. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was also a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She was an avid needle worker and made over 100 heirloom “name” crochet items for family and friends. She enjoyed sharing recipes with family and friends and was devoted to her family.
Survivors include three sons, Ken Buikema of Clinton, IA, Vern Buikema of Lakewood, CO, and Gary Buikema of Fulton; six grandchildren, Nicci (John) Havenaar, Kim (Pete Readman) Buikema, Brad (Jessica) Buikema, Bryan (Amber) Buikema, Brooke Buikema, and Brenda (Brian) Holcomb; five great-grandchildren, Josephine and Jacob Havenaar, Ben and Beckett Holcomb, and Busby Buikema; two sisters, Anna Marie Smith and Bernice (Clarence) Workman, both of Fulton; one brother, Paul J. Huizenga, of Fulton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter, two sisters, Gertrude Drolema and Min Huizenga, and one brother, Charles Huizenga.
