“Derby Day” at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, at 406 Main Street, Savanna, IL, will have a special guest on Saturday, May 7, 2016. Illinois Harness Racing Hall of Fame recipient Walter Paisley will make a guest appearance at the event.
Paisley, shown at left, was honored in 1981 by the Illinois Harness Horseman’s Association Hall of Fame. Currently living in Stockton, IL, Paisley became the fifth driver in harness racing history to surpass the 5000 victory plateau.
The 3:00 p.m. event will feature a ladies hat contest. Wearing a hat is optional. Gentlemen are encouraged to wear bow ties, which also are optional. The social afternoon will include a short trivia game about horses and a hat contest.
Refreshments include mock mint juleps, cheese and crackers, and Derby pie. A $5 donation will be appreciated.
The Savanna event time is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. It will not conflict with the 142nd running of The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Race time at 5:30.
