Girl Scout Troop 1504 met in Fellowship Hall of Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. Lincolnway, Morrison, IL, on Monday, April 19, 2021, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.  Earlier in the year, girls chose three organizations to receive varied boxes of Girl Scout Cookies.

  • American Legion Post 328:  Veterans were recognized for being veterans.  Left-to-right in back are Legionnaires Adjutant Ken Petersen, Commander Larry Zuidema, and Vice Commander Terry Jones.
  • City of Morrison:  Employees were thanked for keeping Grove Hill Cemetery and the parks so clean, mowing grass, and picking up sticks and trash.  City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen received a box to distribute at City Hall.
  • Morrison Community Hospital:  Front-line medical workers were acknowledged for their care and sacrifice during the earlier stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Kelsie Lowery, R.N., was given cookies for the staff.

Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts nestled at their honorees’ feet.  Troop Leader Hillary Blevins stands at far right.

Hillary Blevins (nee Vavra) was nine years old, in third grade, when she brought home a Mother’s Day plant in a cup in 1986.  Her Prophetstown Elementary School teacher, Madonna Jacobson, had brought a huge container bursting with Sansevieria Trifasciata, to share with her pupils.  The plant is nicknamed Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue.  That container originated with Jacobson’s mother, so it was decades old when Hillary was less than one decade old.

The Editor has nurtured that indestructible, prolific plant–and its copious offshoots–for three-and-a-half decades, since 1986.  Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2021, seemed a perfect time for Blevins to share some of the propagated plants with her Girl Scouts.  She told the origin story of the plants which 21 girls planted in cups, on Monday, April 19.  Six troop members were not in attendance.

Girls Scouts of Northern Illinois will pay registration fees from now through September 2022, if girls and adults register before Wednesday, May 12, 2021Click here for registration instructions.
