Odell Public Library’s Summer Reading Program offers something for everyone this year. In addition to the popular children’s summer reading club, Odell is debuting options for teens and adults to enjoy. Reading makes Morrison a brighter, stronger community. See which program fits your family.
The Children’s Summer Reading Program, sponsored by United Way of Whiteside County, is open to children preschool-age through 8th grade. This year’s theme is “Read to the Rhythm.” Participants will be treated to a variety of musical activities including crafts, dancing, and special guests. Registration is required by Saturday, June 6, 2015. Children will need a parent/guardian signature and a current library card to sign up. Registration forms were sent home with students last week, and extras are available at the library.
Special programming takes place on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Odell beginning June 11, and ending July 2. Not only is Summer Reading Club tons of fun, but it helps students bridge the literacy gap between school sessions. Children who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school. Kids who keep their reading muscles sharp perform better in reading and math when they return to school in the fall.
The new Teen Summer Reading Program, “Books 2 Movies”, spotlights young adult literature that has hit the big screen. The lineup this summer is Holes by Louis Sachar, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Each month, participants will read a book, then have a group movie day to see how the film compares. Popcorn and beverages will be provided. Participants will be entered in monthly drawings for some great prizes donated by local businesses. In addition, there will be a Grand Prize Drawing for one lucky reader to win an after-hours movie and pizza party for up to ten friends at Odell. Registration is required, and participants under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature. Everyone needs a current library card. Fliers were emailed to students; extras are available at the library.
The new Adult Summer Reading Program is for anyone who loves to read or anyone who could use a little incentive to hit the books again. Simply read a book, then stop into the library to enter for a weekly drawing. Participants will be asked to rate their book on a five-star scale, write down a favorite line, and–of course–share the title and author. These quick reviews will be posted at the library so we can see what Morrison is reading this summer. Maybe you’ll inspire someone to pick up a new author–or warn them away from that one-star read. The program begins Monday, June 1, and ends Friday, July 31, with drawings taking place each Friday afternoon.
Odell Public Library thanks United Way of Whiteside County, as well as many generous local businesses–including Happy Joe’s, Co-Z Corner, Community State Bank, Morrison Family Health Clinic, and Fitzgerald Pharmacy–for donations and support of Odell’s summer reading programs. Thank you for supporting life-long learning!
