Gene DeMay, 90, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, June 17, 2019, at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling, IL.
Gene was born on May 22, 1929, in Prophetstown, IL, to Alphonse and Marjorie May (Lindberg) DeMay. He was educated in the Prophetstown Grade Schools and was a graduate of Prophetstown High School. On October 8, 1950, he married Dorothy Tegeler in Fenton, IL. Gene served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had owned and operated Jim and Gene’s Texaco in Prophetstown, and also worked with his father as a house painter. He then was employed by General Electric in Morrison, until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, the Morrison American Legion Post #328, the former Morrison Country Club, and Prairie Ridge Golf Course. Gene was an avid golfer, and he was proud of shooting a hole-in-one three different times. He also enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Debra (Randy) Roe of Clinton, IA; one son, Robert (Deborah) DeMay of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Michael, and Nicholas Stolts, Mandy Roe, Adrian (Curtis) Noteboom, Angie (Tony) Wadle, and Kelly (Gregg) Spear; 13 great-grandchildren, Johnathan and Kalley Stolts, Taylor Runge-Proko, Avery and Andrew Maresca, Olivia Wadle, Logan, Owen, and Olivia Noteboom, Kyle, Brandon, and Christopher Spear, and Dilan Trester; six sisters, Patty (Jim) Krause of Geneseo, IL, Mary Roman of Rochelle, IL, Shirley (Elery) Johnson of Sterling, IL, Judy James of St. Louis, MO, Kathy (Claude) Davidson of Seattle, WA, and Sally Hendrichs of Rock Falls, IL; two brothers, Gilbert DeMay of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Kent (Sue) DeMay of Sterling.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Louise Franks and Jackie Denton; two brothers, Marshall DeMay and Marvin “Art” DeMay.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2019, at Morrison United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ryan Sutton officiating.
A visitation will be prior to the funeral, Friday, June 21, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Interment is in the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown, IL.
The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
A memorial to Morrison United Methodist Church has been established.
