Gary J. Balk, 76, of Fulton, IL, died Friday, July 6, 2018, at Pleasant View Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Morrison, IL.
Gary was born November 2, 1941, in Fulton, to John R. and Berniece R. (Norman) Balk. He was educated in the Fulton Christian Grade School and attended Fulton High School. Gary married Linda K. Wierenga on August 1, 1962, in Fulton. He was employed as an electrician for the former Heusinkveld Electric in Fulton and later was self-employed for Balk Electric. Most recently he worked for Leslie Electric in Clinton, IA. Gary owned and operated the Fulton Laundry Mat, along with his brother, Randy. Gary was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton and currently a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton and had served as an Elder. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Fulton Fire Department. Gary enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing, hunting, and trapping.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; three daughters, Glinda (Felipe) Gonzalez of Camanche, IA, Kristi (Jeff) Mahoney of Davenport, IA, and Heather (Jason) Reid of Fargo, ND; two sons, James (Becky) Balk of Low Point, IL, and Patrick (Sondra Briese) Balk of Sabula, IA; 11 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Jansma of Waupun, WI; two brothers, Randy (Sheila) Balk of Davenport, IA, and Norman (Anne) Balk of Fulton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, preceded by visitation from 5:00 p.m., until the time of the service. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Stephan, Pastor of Second Reformed Church in Fulton, IL.
A memorial has been established by the family.
