“Frozen,” Disney’s newest musically animated film, has been chosen for the “hot” month of August. This wildly popular movie is a fairy tale about true love, but this time, the love is between sisters. Bring your grandchild or have them bring you to this delightful story, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen.” The movie will be shown on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Program Room at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, complete with popcorn and pop.
Why pick a children’s movie even if it is so very popular, you might ask. The answer: “Frozen’s” story is one for people of all ages. It tells, through story and song, the message of support and loyalty. As young children, Anna and Elsa were joyous playmates and inseparable friends. But Elsa’s special power, to turn anything to ice and snow from her fingertips, comes back to haunt her–when she accidentally zaps her sister, Anna.
Elsa’s parents lock her away and close down the castle, which devastates young Anna. Once Elsa reaches 18 and is ready to take over the throne, the sisters reunite, though awkwardly. A run-in with a visiting prince who sets his sights on Anna triggers Elsa’s anger, and she mistakenly turns their sunny kingdom into perpetual winter. Elsa runs away to the highest mountain she can find in exile and sings the powerful ballad of the show, “Let It Go.”
Anna begins the journey of finding her sister and restoring order in the kingdom. Along the way she receives help from an underemployed ice salesman, Kristoff, and his trusty reindeer sidekick, Sven. The all meet up with a singing snowman named Olaf who dreams of basking in the sun. Together they make their way on the obstacle-filled trek to Elsa’s imposing fortress.
“Frozen” is perhaps family entertainment of a new generation just as “Snow White,” “Cinderella,” and “Beauty and the Beast” were to older generations. “It’s a sweet bucketful of ice cream with quality messages mixed in.”
