The 2016 IHSA Class 2A Regionals opened on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, with the Morrison Fillies opposing the home field host, Bureau Valley Storm.
Ashley Phillips, Bureau Valley second baseman, drove the first pitch from Fillie starter Lauren Pannier to the left field fence for an opening triple. She scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly to put the Storm up 1-0.
Morrison’s second baseman, Emma Melton, returned the favor and opened the bottom of the first inning with a single. She advanced to third on two wild pitches and later scored on a Jaeden Workman sacrifice fly, to even the score at 1-1. Pannier controlled the Storm after the first, allowing only two more hits in her five innings of work.
The Fillies erupted for six runs in the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run by Lauren Vos. The Morrison team added an insurance run in the fifth inning, when Emma Sitzmore homered over the center field fence.
Brooke Stralow returned to the mound in the sixth in relief and was greeted with a double by Ashley Phillips and Darcy Kepner and an error, to shorten the Fillies’ lead to 8-4. Stralow struck out two of the three batters to close the game and earn the Fillies a Saturday (10:00 a.m.) appearance in the Regional final.
