Feral Cats and Trash/Recycling Theft

feralcatsChief of Police Brian Melton reports, “The City of Morrison[, IL,] does not currently offer a specific program to address the problem of feral cats.  Most, if not all, communities experience a feral cat population, and the solutions are numerous.  At this time, MPD is offering our Community some information on the problem of stray and feral cats.”

“First, do not feed or provide shelter for feral cats.  According to City Ordinance, providing food and shelter for feral cats can be construed as permitting and/or causing a nuisance.”

“There are many cat repellant products on the market, and home remedies can be produced that are safe and effective.  Pest control services may offer some solutions, as well.  More information can be found online or by contacting a pest control service.”

Melton addressed interference with trash and recycling containers.  “Recently, there have been a few complaints and comments of individuals rummaging through trash and recycling containers, once placed curbside for collection.  According to City Ordinance, once trash and recycling containers have been placed curbside, those items become property of the City.”

It is unlawful for any unauthorized person to deposit, remove, deface, destroy, collect, or pick up any of these items.”

Furthermore, “Each location [where trash/recyclables are removed] constitutes a separate violation with a minimum fine of $50.”

He ended, “If you observe a violation, please contact MPD immediately.”
