The Volunteer Millers at de Immigrant windmill in Fulton, IL, will host their monthly program on Monday, February 27, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. The event will be at the Windmill Cultural Center, 111 – 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, across from the authentic Dutch windmill. These programs are supported by a grant from the D. S. Flikkema Foundation.
“Cycling the Rhine River from Basel to Krimpen” will be presented by Russ and Linda Grimm. The Grimms grew up in the Clinton, IA, area but now reside in Cedar Falls, IA. Russ was a juvenile probation officer for 25 years and then entered private practice as a family therapist. Linda was a substitute teacher and then an adjunct instructor in the theatre department at UNI. Both, now retired, are enjoying family and continue to travel, hike, and bike in both the U. S. and Europe.
Primarily, they have spent time exploring our National Parks; local trails; trails in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Their cycling itineraries include Erie Canal in New York; Mickelson Trail in South Dakota; Coeur d’ Alene Trail in Idaho; Hiawatha Trail in Montana. Russ has cycled across Iowa in RAGBRAI ten times.
In 2014 the couple cycled throughout the Netherlands. In 2016 they cycled along the Rhine River. Each trip recorded more than 700 miles.
Their program will center on their experiences along the Rhine River. Discussion will include the preparation involving transporting of bicycles, choosing the route, booking accommodations, and light packing. The Grimms will share their stories, unexpected events, wonderful people, and incredible scenery on their tour.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. The facility is accessible to persons with disabilities.
