Editor’s note: These are very crude copies of U. S. currency. Compare for yourself the differences in Andrew Jackson’s face on the front and The White House–with no portico or name label–on the back. Even children can spot these fakes.
Attention local businesses: Rock Falls, and Sterling, IL, Police Departments have received numerous calls regarding fake $20 bills being used at local businesses. Any customer receiving $20 bills as change should also examine them.
Morrison Chamber of Commerce listed tips to protect owners, staff, checkout clerks, and customers:
- check all incoming $20 bills carefully.
- train employees how to spot fake money.
- avoid making change for customers who do not purchase items. Be especially careful when asked for change from a minimal value purchase (ie. a pack of gum paid for with a $20 or $100 bill.)
- use pens/money markers to verify bill’s authenticity, available at SBM in Sterling.
- if possible, note any identifying features of a person presenting counterfeit bills.
- contact your local Police Department if you notice any suspicious activity.
The bills photographed here say “MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY” in the right corner.
