Fair Day Two, August 15, Events and Winners

Posted by

On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, the Whiteside County Fair opened its gates at 8:00 a.m., with overcast skies and rain to come.  Due to extensive rain in the afternoon, a presentation by the Albany, Cordova, and Fulton Fire Departments was cancelled.  A truck was to be available to view, and handouts were planned.  A popular display featuring a burning house would have allowed children to use hoses to extinguish flames.

Fortunately, two grandstand concerts enjoyed fine weather on the Farmers National Bank stage.  The Martin Family Circus, sponsored by Wild Rose Casino, opened at 6:30 p.m.  For an hour, Paul and Jamie Martin, their sons March, 21, and Kell,18, and daughters Texas, 13 on the day of the concert, and Tallant, 11, entertained with vocals and instrumentals.  Eight years ago at their Nashville, TN, home, the parents were singing.  One of the boys entered the room and spontaneously added harmony; they were not aware that he–and the siblings–could sing harmony.  After receiving grandparent approval of the blended sound, their children began to sing as a family group.  “Family harmonies are favorites; it flows along,” stated Jamie.  The new name is Rockland Road.

Keith Anderson took the stage shortly after 8:00.  He is a country music vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter.  Anderson was sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank NA.

Members of the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office attend the Fair during the week, primarily to meet the public in a congenial and an informative format.  They offer plenty of giveaways, which encourage children to meet the Deputies:  stick-on Sheriff badges, rubber anti-bully bracelets, coloring/activity book, 9-1-1 pencils, and black balloons.  Raffle tickets were sold to support the Whiteside County Mounted Patrol costs for bullet-proof vests, uniforms, and equipment.  These are Auxiliary Deputies who walk the fairgrounds during the evening.  In the first photo with the Department’s HMMWV, left-to-right are Lieutenant Seth Janssen, Deputy Michael Leighton, and Sergeant Jake Kilberg.  Chief Deputy John Booker, left, and Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi are shown in the second photograph.
