Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced his office’s reopening plan, beginning Monday, June 1, 2020. The first two months will focus on serving only new drivers; customers with expired Driver’s Licenses/ID cards; vehicle transactions. Currently there are more than 700,000 expired Driver’s Licenses/ID cards and 1,900,000 expired vehicle registrations.
On Tuesday, June 2, all Driver Services facilities outside the Chicago metro area will open.
Hours of operation are
- Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Wednesday-through-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to noon.
From June 1-through-Friday, July 31, facilities will serve only
- new drivers (most will be 16-year-old driver applicants)
- customers with expired Driver’s Licenses and ID cards
- vehicle transactions.
Protective Safety Measures
Customers and Secretary of State employees will be required to wear face masks unless a medical condition prohibits the safe use of a mask. Plexiglass dividers have been installed at all work stations; tape has been applied to the floor in six-foot intervals, to follow social distancing guidelines; the number of customers inside a facility at one time will be limited.
For drive tests, employees will wear a face mask and a face shield due to the close proximity with the customer inside the vehicle. Customers will be required to wear face masks unless medically unable. Disposable plastic will be used to cover vehicle seats during the drive test and then discarded immediately after conclusion of the test.
Online Services Still Encouraged
White encourages residents to go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com and take advantage of online services. Some online services include
- renewing a vehicle registration
- obtaining a duplicate Driver’s License or ID card
- obtaining a Driving Record Abstract
- renewing a Driver’s License through the Safe Driver Renewal program.
90-Day Extensions for Driver’s License/ID and Vehicle Registration
White’s office extended expiration dates by at least 90 days after the Governor’s Monday, June 1, Disaster Proclamation Executive Order ends. This extension will ensure Driver’s Licenses, ID cards, and vehicle registrations remain valid and will help alleviate the initial rush of customers visiting reopened facilities.
REAL ID Federal Extension
The Federal Government extended the REAL ID deadline by one year, until October 1, 2021. People with valid U. S. passports are encouraged to consider delaying their visit to a facility to apply for a REAL ID until their Driver’s License nears its expiration date.
