Dr. Richard Cal Vandermyde (1930 – 2023)

Dr. Richard Cal Vandermyde, 92, of Morrison, IL, died in the early hours of April 1, 2023.

He was born in the Sterling, IL, Hospital (now CGH) on June 21, 1930. He grew up in Prophetstown, IL, attending the local schools and graduating from Prophetstown High School in 1947.

He attended Central College, Pella, IA, and graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. degree in 1951.

He attended University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, receiving his M.D. in 1955. He interned at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, IL, from 1955 to 1956. He served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1958, stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. His General (or Family) Practice residency was undertaken at University of Colorado facilities in Denver, CO, and Albuquerque, NM, from 1958 to 1960.

In 1960, he joined his father, Dr. Isaac Vandermyde, in Family Practice in Morrison. Later, Dr. Richard Londo joined the practice. He retired in 1997.

He was a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, and Whiteside County Medical Society. Dr. Vandermyde was on staff at Morrison Community Hospital and a Past President of staff there.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Morrison and a Past Ruling Elder. He served on the Sauk Valley College Foundation Board; Whiteside County Board of Health (Past President); Odell Library Board; Morrison Area Community Foundation (Founder and Past President.) He was a member of Morrison Rotary Club since 1997 and Past President. Dr. Vandermyde was Plant Physician at GE Appliance Control Department from 1969-1997.

He married Barbara Ann Nadel in 1954.

He is survived by his four sons Mark (Debbie), William, Steve (Maggie), and Scott. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Rachel, Cara Nicole, Raime, Lucas (Kate Sulkowski), Emily (Zach) Williamson, and Garrett. Further, he is survived by one great-grandson, Henry (Hank) Vanderholm.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents, Isaac and Ellamay of Morrison; sister, Maribeth (Beth) Erkonen of Coralville, IA; brother, Don of Chicago, IL

On Friday, April 14, 2023, there will a Memorial Gathering for a time of remembrance, at the Community Room, Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, there will be a Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Lincolnway, Morrison, IL, at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow at the church.
