Dorothy H. Jacobs, former teacher, 105 years old, went to be with the Lord at her home, on Sunday, March 13, 2022, surrounded by people who loved her.
Dorothy was born December 2, 1916, in rural Sterling, IL, to John and Helen (Stralow) Jacobs. Wanting to get her education, she walked to Talbott School with her sisters and then attended Sterling High School, before earning her teaching degree at NIU in Dekalb. IL. She first taught in the country schools at Swan Lake, southwest of Rock Falls, Stone School on Freeport blacktop, and Science Ridge School, before being called to teach at Sterling Public Schools. Dorothy will be remembered for signing blood donors at the American Red Cross; delivering meals for the Food Pantry; ringing bells for the Salvation Army. She retired in 1997. After her retirement she was a volunteer tutor for many students at Christ Lutheran School. Dorothy was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 50 years. She will always be remembered for making pies for every church fellowship. Dorothy enjoyed playing golf and bowling. She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan.
Surviving her are Joyce (Ron) Roberts, Janice (Gail) Bush, Karla Hinrichs all of Sterling; Karen (Ron) Nehring of Morrison, IL; Sandy (Bob) Daughterty of Little Chute, WI; Sherrie (Lyle) Dirks of Winnebago, IL; Marilou Hohlen and Patricia Hohlen. She had 19 great-nieces and -nephews; 26 great-great-nieces and -nephews; several great-great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Jacobs; sisters, Nellie (Henry) Hohlen, Evelyn Jacobs, Marjorie (Elmer) Hinrichs; nephews Ronald Hohlen, Duane Hohlen, and Lyle Hohlen.
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to-3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 20, 2022, at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., with Visitation one hour prior, starting at 9:30 on Monday, March 21, 2022, at Messiah Lutheran Church, with Reverend Chad Boloson, officiating.
Burial will take place at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling, IL.
A memorial has been established to Messiah Lutheran Church or Christ Lutheran School.
