Donald J. Hook, 79, of 804 8th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, IA.
Don was born January 13, 1934, in Fulton Township, IL, to Peter R. and Winifred (Bronkema) Hook. He was educated in the Morrison Grade Schools and Morrison High School in Morrison. He married Carol A. Yarbrough on October 7, 1953, in Morrison. Don was employed for 40 years for International Harvester/J.I. Case Company in East Moline, IL. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #1304 in East Moline and The River City Ringers Horseshoe Club in Clinton, IA. Don enjoyed horseshoe pitching, bowling, talking politics, and spending time with family, especially his great-grandchildren who called him “Granpa Don.” He was also an avid reader and Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carol; three daughters, Pamela (Rick) Gabel of North Platte, NE; Becky McGinty of Clinton; and Shelly (Paul) VenHuizen of Fulton; two sons, Ronald (Marge) Hook and Kurt (Tammy) Hook both of Fulton; six grandchildren, Ricky (Krystal) Gabel, Jr., Ryan Gabel, Lewis Creed, Jr., Amy (Rob) Pilkinton, Ron (Kelly) Hook, Jr; Monica (Chad) Piercy; three step-grandchildren, Derek (Karen) VenHuizen, Adam (Michelle) VenHuizen, and Natasha (Chad) Funderburk; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn (Frank) Freas and Phyllis (Willard) Huizenga, both of Morrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Echoe McGinty and Jennifer Creed; one son-in-law, Jason McGinty; two brothers, Robert Hook and Gerald Hook.
