Joel Downie, CPA, of Rock Falls, IL, donated the bicycle that made Brady Ballard smile on Friday, August 16, 2013. He is an 11-year-old sixth grader who lives in Tampico, IL, with mother Stephanie Ballard and Brett Adams. Brady has a bike, of sorts, but it is “an old, 1962 model.” This bicyle is a beauty! Elizabeth Lindquist is a ten-year-old fifth grader from Sterling, IL. She is an experienced baker who surprised herself and mother Lisa Lindquist, in the Junior Culinary Department, by earning a Best of Show rosette. Her smile tells the story.
Lisa explained, “She’s only been doing it for a couple years.” The mother earned second and third place ribbons on her bakery items.
“It’s the first time I ever got a Best of Show for anything!” said Elizabeth. Her fondant-covered Barbie Doll Cake also earned first place in the “Decorated Cake with Some Edibles” class. Using her great-grandmother’s recipe–and accidentally tweeking it–she received a second placing for a chocolate sheet cake. Second place ribbons were earned in Junior Hobbies, Division I, Collections, for Elizabeth’s Not-Stuffed Animals (bunnies) and Not-Stuffed Bears (ceramic.)
Todd Mickley, Whiteside County Fair Board Chair of Publicity and Advertising, submitted the results of events on Friday, August 16. Winners in Junior Culinary, Heavy Horses, and Western Horses follow. All towns are assumed to be from Illinois, unless noted.
