Day 3 of the Fair

Posted by

Kent Foley of Morrison, IL, won the bicycle drawing on Thursday, August 15, 2013, a donation by Five Star Enterprises of Morrison.  The seven-year-old is entering second grade.  Six-year-old Addison Hoyle of Dixon, IL, won a plate of puppy cupcakes during the 4:00 p.m. Cake and Pie Walk.  Grandmother Sue Devers and Steven Schroeder brought her to the Fair.  Winged athletes nestled in their shaded pigeon coop, but no human was available.  If you have an interest in racing pigeons, call 815-284-2456 or 815-225-7399.  The website is rrvpigeonclub.org.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office has annual exhibits at the Fair. Standing left-to-right beside the department’s High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) are Sergeant Seth Janssen, Chief Deputy Tim Cain, Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi, and Lieutenant Andy Henson. Whiteside County Recorder Dawn M. Young tended the Republican booth to support those running in the Tuesday, November 5, election.  She is unopposed until 2016, but still passed out her trademark nail files.  You see, she f-i-l-e-s public records.  Husband Ernie Huling, who turns 60 on Friday, August 16, is always her capable helper.

The Athletic Boosters food booth, at the north end of the grandstand, was “womanned” by Glenda Deter, Morrison High School Softball Coach Tammy Deter, and Cheerleading Coach Dana Bennett.  The latter is assisted by Andrea Allen and Amanda Cook.  The Boosters’ earnings support team entry fees at tournaments; general supplies ($16,000 last year); mini-bussing for smaller teams ($10,000.)  Fair week offers them two annual fundraisers.  The Fair Board pays the Boosters to man the gates.

“It takes a lot of people to run the gates!” stated Brenda Deter.

Besides this food stand, the Boosters split profits with the Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Association popular food tent.  Shown left-to-right are Cheerleaders Demery Haan, Brook Gallentine, and Halie Ward with Coach Bennett.

 13-13 / OPEN RABBITS

rabbitsThis year’s rabbit entries reached around 460. Some pens have multiple rabbits in them, like the meat pens which have three per pen.  Out of the 47 breeds recognized by the Illinois Rabbit Breeders Association (IRBA), around 20 were present.  The section “any other breed” takes breeds that are not already categorized.  There may be more one different breed in the section.

Dale and Evelyn Hanson are the Superintendents of the Rabbit Department and run the show with the help of their daughter, Jackie.  Judging started at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2013.  Three judges are going at a time with each of them doing a different breed. Each judge had a book of standards that each rabbit is evaluated on to determine placement.

The barn is open to the general public during judging, so anyone can wander in and out and witness the judges in action.

Best in Show:  Lynn Eden (Any Other Breed)

Best 4 class:  Lynn Eden (Any Other Breed)

Best 6 class:  Kenny McLaughlin (Satin)

With another year of bountiful rabbit entries, this year’s Rabbit Show was bouncing with competition.  Lynn Eden of Sterling took the Best of Show Trophy as well as the Best 4 Class Honors.  His Any Other Breed, Junior Doe was the Best of Show and Best 4 Class winner.  Gary Geerts of Sterling earned the Meat Pen Honors for the 3rd year in a row and the Single Fryer Honors for the 2nd year in a row.
