During the first day of the 143rd Whiteside County Fair, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, Zach Vandervort was awarded a Kent 21-speed, “Shockwave” bicycle, compliments of CGH Medical Center in Sterling, IL. Zach is a new Morrison, IL, resident. He will attend Morrison High School on Monday, August 19.
Entrants in the daily bike give-away must be between the ages of six and 15; Zach just made the cut-off. He is nearly 16. He is doubly lucky, because the first person whose name was selected did not appear within the three minute time limit.
Ruth Rogers also had good luck in the popular Cake and Pie Walk. This rousing event is held in the Brown Building at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. She won a meringue-topped, coconut cream pie. She was not over-eager to win a delicacy.
“We bring our hired man [Art Hans], and he loves [the Cake and Pie Walk]! Every year we come. He really enjoys it.” Rogers lives north of Morrison.
