The following Morrison, IL, events during September 2013 are supplied by Corinne Bender, Morrison Chamber of Commerce Administrator and Economic Director, Morrison Area Development Corporation.

Morrison Junior High School, 300 Academic Drive, is the site of a Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser for new library books and resources.  The Book Fair will be open each day through Wednesday, September 11, 2013, during normal school hours:  8:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. and on Tuesday, September 10, until 5:00 p.m. during the volleyball game.  Parents, children, teachers, and the community are invited to attend.

It has been proven that students whose parents stay closely involved in their educational progress throughout elementary and high school are more likely to stay in school and to enter and finish college.  Help your child succeed and gain a greater understanding of the expectations that our schools have for your child, by attending the Morrison Northside Elementary School Open House, on Wednesday, September 11, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Lincolnway, invites you to a FREE Community Meal of delicious food and fellowship on Thursday, September 12, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.  The meal site is handicapped accessible.

The Morrison Elementary PTO will be holding its annual Back to School Hot Dog Roast on Friday, September 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Southside School, 100 Academic Drive.  Free hot dogs, chips, and a drink will be served to all.  There will be cotton candy, games, tattoos, a bounce house, and an inflatable slide as well.  Stop down before the football game to welcome in the new school year with the faculty and staff of the elementary schools.

Open Hand Self Defense (OHSD), 100 E. Knox Street, is proud to present “Unlocking Secrets,” a combat Tai Chi seminar by Grand Master Donald Moore, on Saturday, September 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Grand Master Moore will demonstrate and teach  Tai Chi movements and Quigong.  Admission is $55.  Call 815-718-3994 or visit www.ohsd.yolasite.com for more details.  Open Hand Self Defense offers Tae Kwan Do and Tai Chi classes, in addition to Hapkido self defense classes, for both younger and older students.  All classes are taught by a licensed Hapkido instructor.  Come see what we are all about!

Morrison Historical Society invites you enjoy some homemade ice cream at the 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social and Antique Car Show at Morrison’s Heritage Museum, 202 E. Lincolnway, on Saturday, September 14, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Members of Double-I Antique Auto Club will display vehicles in the museum parking lot. Kenny VenHuizen will be making the ice cream utilizing a “Hit & Miss” John Deere engine.  Musical entertainment will be provided by Jim Seeley, Jr., of Tampico, IL.  Also on the menu are fresh fruit pies served ala mode, BBQ sandwiches, and beverages.

Building off the success of its recent “Strides for Students” 5K run/walk, the Morrison Schools Foundation announces its “Striding for Students” Pledge Drive.  Trent Bush (MSF Board President), Todd Schlegel (Morrison alumnus), Darryl Hogue (Morrison Junior High Principal), and Rory Coghlan (MHS teacher) are participating in the Quad Cities Marathon on Sunday, September 22. They are seeking pledges for an amount per mile (26.2 miles!) or a flat sponsorship.  100% of the proceeds will benefit the Morrison Schools Foundation.  Donations can be made by check mailed to P.O. Odell’s Friends of the Library group is hosting a “Brains for Books” Trivia Night and Dessert Auction on Saturday, September 28, at the Oak Room at Prairie Ridge Golf Course, 903 W. Morris Street.  Registration and dining begin at 6:00 p.m. with trivia at 6:30.  Come and enjoy trivia over tacos, chips, and homemade salsa and guacamole, along with pop and margaritas!  A decadent dessert auction will take place throughout the evening as well.  Cost is just $10 per person, with eight people to a team.  Don’t have a team? Pleasant View Rehabilitation and Health Care Center invites Morrison Business to “Spuds & Suds,” a loaded baked potato, cookie, and soda lunch on Friday, September 27.  Delivery will be available to Morrison businesses between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  RSVP orders by Wednesday, September 18, by calling 815-772-7288 or faxing at 815-772-2399.  Cost for lunch is $5 for pick-up or $7 for delivered orders. Potato toppings include cheese, broccoli, bacon, ham, mushrooms, green onions, salsa, sour cream, and butter.  Soda options are Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Root Beer.  Proceeds support the facility enrichment program and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Advantage One Credit Union, 204 n. Jackson Street, is collecting items for Morrison Friends Food Pantry.  Suggested items for donation include canned fruit and vegetables, cereals, boxed and canned foods; toiletry items such as bars of soap, toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream, and deodorant;  cleaning products including laundry detergents, cleansers, and dish soaps;  paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products; baby products of diapers, baby foods, wipes, formulas; miscellaneous items like flour, sugar, syrup, spices, condiments, and cooking spray.

Sign up now for the 26th Annual Harvest Hammer 5K run; 21 mile duathlon; and children’s wee run, fun run, and challenge run.  This year’s event will be held Saturday, September 21, with children’s events beginning at 8:15 a.m. and the 5K and duathlon beginning at 9:00.  In memory of P.E. teacher Pam Bush, Rotary will award a Pam Bush Memorial plaque to the first place boy and girl in each race.  Pam was a passionate supporter of Harvest Hammer and used the event as a fun lesson.  All proceeds from this event benefit local youth, education, community, and international projects of Morrison Rotary Club.  Register online at Get Registered.

Get your foursome together for the April House Advocacy Center Golf Outing, Saturday, September 28, at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Creek Golf Course, 15523 Henry Road.  The four person best-ball scramble is $60 per individual, which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and lunch.  The grant funding that April House had been receiving has been cut, and this fundraiser is a way to replace some of those funds.  For more information, contact Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi at 815-772-5240, or call Dixie Vegter at 815-772-7966 to sign up to play.
