Comets Control Mustangs

A five-run second inning by the Newman Comets was more than enough to halt the Morrison Mustangs at the Morrison Sports Complex, on Friday, April 22, 2016.  It give them a 7-3 win to carry back to Sterling, IL.

Ryan VanZuiden struggled from the start and received strong relief help from Ethan Fischbach.  But the Mustangs couldn’t generate much offense, after the insertion of Newman’s reliever Williams in the fourth inning.  Fischbach gave up only three hits during his five innings of relief.

Rank got the win for Newman Central Catholic as he allowed three runs over three innings. He struck out two, walked three, and surrendered three hits.

Vesley, Rank, and Graham combined for seven hits and four RBI’s to lead Newman’s attack.

VanZuiden was the game’s losing pitcher. He allowed six runs in two innings, walked one, and struck out two.

The top of the first saw Newman take an early lead, 1-0. A single by Rank, bringing home Vesley, started the inning off.

Morrison quickly matched Newman’s inning with a two-run inning of its own in the first. The Mustangs scored on a passed ball and an RBI single by Justin Jensen.

Newman never surrendered the lead after the second inning, scoring five runs on a ground out by Koerner and four singles.

One run in the bottom of the third helped Morrison close its deficit to 7-3, but Rank induced an inning-ending ground out from Merik Kennedy.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 4-6 on the season and 4-2 in TRAC Conference play.
