Morrison history reveals that athletes that earn a first-place award in Illinois High School Association State competition will have signage placed along the State routes near Morrison, identifying the participants and their accomplishments. At the Monday, June 28, 2022, City Council meeting, Joe Robbins, Principal of Morrison Junior High School, asked the City to allow signage to be placed along Academic Drive. [It would identify] all State qualifiers that participated and finished in a position of eighth or higher. These recognition signs would remain visible for one year and then be replaced, by more current results or appropriate support signage. The Council approved installation of posts that would hold two signs sized 4’ x 4’ and/or 4’ x 2’.

Included in the Consent Agenda, the Council approved the appointment of Sharon Boyles to the Historic Preservation Commission and Nick Alvarado to the Planning and Zoning Board. The proposed purchase of a new 2022 John Deere Gator and a 2022 John Deere Tractor with a 48-inch mower deck for a total of $22,673 was approved.

As the Agenda topics shifted to Discussion items, conversations were elevated with debate and individual opinions directed toward the subject matter.

Recreational Site Coordinator: “The Site Coordinator Is tasked with performing labor to ensure recreational facilities are prepared for use. Chief among the duties is monitoring the Sports Complex and making sure the facility is ready for seasonal activities….” Mayor Scott Vandermyde was asked to prepare a job description and advertise the full-time position.

Genesee Street and U. S. Route 30 Intersection: Increased drainage concerns caused by failing infrastructure within IDOT’s Route 30 and the adjourning property owned by First Presbyterian Church ignited ideas of changing Genesee to a one-way street. This will allow the removal the traffic signals. The constant stopping and starting of larger vehicles at traffic lights on Route 30 is being blamed for the failing infrastructure.

Greenland cul-de-sac: The surface of the cul-de-sac is being eroded by the larger [Moring Disposal, Inc.] garbage trucks’ inability to navigate the area without damaging the surface. More discussion will follow and be revealed in future Council meetings.

In closing, the Council was reminded that the road construction within Grove Hill Cemetery will begin the first of July.
