FrostbiteEditor’s note:  For those who do not take precautions during frigid temperatures, do a Google Images search for “frostbite fingers.”

Although CGH Medical Center is always here for you, we are also concerned about the health and safety of our patients and employees.

Frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes. It occurs when intense cold causes ice crystals to form under the skin and the underlying blood vessels.  These crystals cause blood to clot in the blood vessels, thus reducing the oxygen supply to essential tissues.  Early signs of frostbite include red or pale skin, prickling, and numbness.  Seek warm shelter if you notice signs of frostbite, and do not walk on frostbitten feet.  Seek emergency medical help if the affected area includes pale or blue skin that feels cold, numb, and stiff or rubbery to the touch, or if you suspect hypothermia.

“With frostbite occurring within a matter of minutes, in the frigid forecasted temperatures and wind chills, we are urging everyone to stay inside and stay warm–unless absolutely, medically necessary–over the next few days,” said CGH President and CEO Dr. Paul Steinke.   “If you must go out, it’s very important that you dress properly for the extreme cold, including a heavy coat, hat, scarf, mittens or gloves, and boots,” added Dr. Steinke.

Therefore, CGH Medical Center is announcing the following schedule changes:

  • Tuesday, January 29, 2019, – CGH Medical Center, the CGH Main Clinic and all outlying clinics will have normal operating hours.  If for some reason an appointment or procedure needs to be cancelled, our offices will contact you.
  • Wednesday, January 30,  – The CGH Main Clinic and all outlying clinics will be closed.  If you have a procedure or test at the hospital, and it has been cancelled, we will call you.
  • Thursday, January 31, at 1 p.m. – CGH Medical Center, the CGH Main Clinic and all outlying clinics will resume normal operating hours.

If you would like to reschedule an appointment and have not heard from us, please call 815-625-0400.  You will be directed to the proper department to reschedule.  Or visit www.cghmc.com/winter to find the direct number to call to make your cancellation.

Additionally, CGH welcomes anyone who needs relief from the cold to use the CGH Emergency Room lobby and cafeteria, located at 100 E. LeFevre Road, Sterling, IL. Cafeteria hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
