Capitol Locked Down; Shots Fired

Editor’s note:  Joe Bielema, Morrison, IL, was part of a veterans’ Honor Flight tour of military memorials when the following events took place.  In a phone interview the same afternoon, he reported the tour was uninterrupted.  The “all clear” was announced about an hour after the initial sound of gunshots.

The U. S. Capitol in Washington, D. C., was locked down and Police instructed people there to “shelter in place,” after the sound of gunshots was reported in the area of the Capitol building, just after 1:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, October 3, 2013.

ABC News said they received unconfirmed reports that a police officer was injured in the shooting.  ABC later reported the incident may have begun when someone attempted to ram a vehicle into the gates at the White House.

CNN reporter Dana Bash said during a live report from the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, that Reid indicated one person was injured in the alleged shooting.

CNN reporter Ted Barrett reports an order was given over the Capitol speaker system to shelter in place because of an active shooter situation.
