Building Better Readers at Odell

Posted by

BetterReadersEach Spring, the Odell Public Library Friends excitedly set out to improve or expand an area of the library.  Last year, the community raised more than $1500 for our youngest patrons.  Thanks to those generous donations, Odell added a Play Kitchen and Puppet Theater area to the library.  Both are used enthusiastically by many families.  Also, the library was able to replace many well-worn children’s materials.  This year, the Friends are focusing their energies on Odell’s Elementary-aged readers.  It’s an exciting time in the minds of these young students, and it’s critical for Odell to have materials that interest children as they become independent readers.

This year, we are excited to announce that Modern Woodmen of America, Chapter Two of Fulton, IL, has agreed to match all monetary donations up to $2500.  Please help Odell Public Library with your generous donor support, so we receive $5000 in funds for the young readers.

Modern Woodmen of America also is sponsoring a drawing for donors, with prizes including a quilt rack, a Christmas tree, gift cards, and more.  Beginning Monday, April 2, tickets will be available for $1 each or $5 for an arm’s-length.  Drawings for these prizes will be held on Thursday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m., but entrants need not be present to win.

To help the library “Build Better Readers,” the Odell Public Library Friends are asking for monetary donations, books, and other supplies . For each donation received, Odell will add a paper LEGO brick to a display, so the Community can watch how each donation helps the library “build better readers.”  The fundraiser takes place during the month of April to celebrate National Library Week, which is observed across the Country from Sunday, April 8, to Saturday, April 14, 2018.

There are several ways to contribute this month.  Monetary donations are greatly appreciated.  They will be used to purchase both fiction and non-fiction for our elementary readers and to replace the most popular, best-loved books, including the Little House on the PrairieJuni B. JonesMagic Tree House, and Captain Underpants series, among others.

For individuals who would rather assist by purchasing an item, Amazon Wish Lists have been created for desired books, DVD’s, crafts, and cleaning supplies.  Follow the link provided.

There is also a short list available at Odell’s front desk that includes everyday housekeeping items like Clorox wipes, baby wipes, and copy paper.  Everyday items such as these make sure that areas are kept clean, books are wiped, and that kids have coloring and activity sheets available.  There are many ways to donate, and all are appreciated!

Come support Morrison’s young readers this month.  Visit Odell on Facebook or at www.odellpubliclibrary.com for more information.
