Twelve hits weren’t enough for Morrison as it lost a shootout, 18-8 in five innings, to Peru St. Bede on Saturday, April 23, 2016.
Ethan Fischbach racked up two RBI’s on two hits for Morrison, when he tripled in the second inning and singled in the third.
Even though the Bruin’s Marcinkus allowed eight runs over 4 2/3 innings, he still recorded the victory. Marcinkus struck out one, walked two, and gave up 12 hits.
St. Bede easily handled Morrison pitching: six hitters combined for 12 hits, 11 RBI’s and 14 runs scored.
Ben Vanderlaan took the loss for the Mustangs. St. Bede went up for good in the first, scoring seven runs on an error, a groundout by Szczepaniak, and three singles.
After pushing across two runs in the top of the second, Morrison faced just a 7-2 deficit. An RBI triple by Fischbach and an RBI single by Justin Rodriquez fueled the Morrison comeback. The Mustang Varsity threat came to an end when Marcinkus finally got Ryan Van Zuiden to end the uprising.
St. Bede survived Morrison’s surge and put up six runs of its own in the second. St. Bede scored on an RBI single by Eustice, a passed ball, an RBI single by Szczepaniak, an RBI single by Plankenhorn, and a two-run single by Sadp.
Morrison scored six runs in the top of the third to cut its deficit to five. An RBI double by Merik Kennedy, an RBI single by Vanderlaan, an RBI single by Dylan Keller, and an RBI single by Fischbach triggered the Morrison comeback. But, Marcinkus got VanZuiden to ground out to end the inning.
