The latest series of banners is displayed along the First Avenue Bridge between Sterling, and Rock Falls, IL. They feature winning artwork from Woodlawn Arts Academy’s 2020 Student-Teacher Art Exhibit and are presented through the Academy’s partnership with Sterling Main Street.

Sauk Valley area schools, teachers, and students submitted more than 100 pieces for the exhibit, which opened in late February 2020. Community members were able to vote for their favorites in person, the night of the exhibit opening, and then on Facebook for two weeks. Voting culminated just before Woodlawn was forced to close, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides being featured on the bridge banners, the artwork was featured in the Academy’s program guide and on social media.
“Obviously, with the pandemic, this show ended differently this year,” said Christy Zepezauer, Executive Director of Woodlawn Arts Academy. “But we’re thrilled to be able to continue our community partnership with Sterling Main Street, in order to feature the winning pieces for all to see. It’s a great way to add some beauty to the bridge, and we’re so proud of all of the artists. There is so much talent in the Sauk Valley!”
Night at the Work Desk, a chalk pastel piece by Erin D., 12th grader at Rock Falls High School, was the first-place winner in the grades 9-12 category of the Academy’s 11th Annual Student-Teacher Art Exhibit. First place in the grades 5-8 category went to It’s the Little Things, Prismacolor colored pencil art by Addison W., eighth grader at Morrison Junior High. Hanah H., second grader at Franklin Elementary, Sterling, won first place in the K-4 category with her pastels and tempera piece called Winter Landscape.

· Mug Shot, oil pastel, Camden P., eighth grade, Morrison Junior High, third place, grades 5-8
· Untitled, pencil, Mia T., fourth grade, Morrison Southside School, third place, grades K-4
· The Chandelier, mixed media, Gracen H., 12th grade, Morrison High School, Honorable Mention, grades 9-12
· Fishing, oil pastel, Nyah B., seventh grade, Morrison Junior High, Honorable Mention, grades 5-8
· Shape Scarecrow, Sharpie and crayon, Harper C., kindergarten, Franklin Elementary, Sterling, Honorable Mention, grades K-4.
