The Morrison Mustangs were welcomed into Erie, IL, for the Erie-Prophetstown High School’s Senior Night on Friday, October17, 2014. However, they were handed a 49-0 defeat featuring the Panther speed on several large plays.
The Panthers opened the game by taking the initial series on their own 42-yard line and marching the 58 yards into the end zone eight plays later, on a 33-yard run by Dillon Binion, with 8:12 remaining in the quarter. A two-point conversion made it 8-0.
Following Morrison’s three-and-out, the Panthers needed only three plays to cover sixty yards for another score. Jordan Chandler scampered 30 yards before catching a 30-yard pass for a touchdown at the 5:48 mark, and the hosts were up 15-0. On the Mustang’s second possession, they generated a 10-play drive that ended the quarter with the ball sitting on the 5-yard line awaiting a third down snap. Merik Kenady dove off tackle for four yards, before Andy Bird was stopped on the 1-yard line, and the Mustangs had to turn the ball over on downs. Dillon Binion of E-P moved the ball out to the 5-yard line, before Chandler skirted left end and ran the sideline for a 95-yard touchdown. The score moved to 21-0. Three minutes later, the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs after failing on a fourth-and-four attempt at the 38-yard line. E-P used five minutes to run 12 plays to cross the end line again, with 2:12 left in the half and the Panthers leading 28-0. Following the ensuing kickoff, Morrison’s Justin Jensen was intercepted, and his pass returned to the Morrison 10-yard line. Four snaps later, Binion ran the ball in from the 5-yard line. The halftime score was shown as 35-0 in favor of the Panthers.
The Mustangs were unable to fall on the on-side kick to open the second half, and the Panthers recovered the kick on the Morrison 39-yard line. It only took the Panthers one play to cover those 39 yards. The continuous clock was activated, as the score expanded to 42-0 with 11:46 left in the third quarter. Morrison used the entire quarter to march from their own 35-yard line to the Erie-Prophetstown 10-yard line. Here, Justin Jensen fumbled the snap, and Binion picked up the loose ball and ran 91 yards for another E-P score, with only 27 seconds left in the third quarter.
The fresh-soph squads played out the remainder of the fourth quarter without managing to score on either end of the field. The night ended with Erie-Prophetstown leading 49-0. The evening saw only 25 yards gained via the pass by Morrison. E-P gained 500 all-purpose yards without completing a single pass.
The Morrison Mustangs will close out the season as they recognize the Seniors, before battling the Riverdale Rams at E. M. Bud Cole Field in Morrison, IL, on Friday, October 24.
