Bernice D. Engelkens, 102, of Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison, IL, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at the Living Center.
Bernice was born October 11, 1911, in Morrison, to Benjamin and Kate (Fisher) Decker. She was educated in the Morrison Grade Schools. Bernice married Edward O. “Ted” Engelkens on April 13, 1933, in Morrison. He died December 5, 1982. Bernice was first employed at the laundry service that was then located in Morrison. She then worked as a cook in the former D and I Restaurant in Morrison. Later, she did private house cleaning. Bernice was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. She was also a member of the Mothers of World War II. She enjoyed playing cards and also going to Bible Study classes.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine McCollam of Bettendorf, IA; one son, Robert Engelkens of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Craig (Sharon) McCollam, Nancy (Chip) Wells, Chris McCollam, Edward John Engelkens, and Robert Engelkens, Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kayla, and Riley Wells, Brandon Engelkens, Joshua and Shaine Engelkens; one great-great-granddaughter, Chassidy Engelkens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; five sisters, Jenny Aggen, Effie Huizenga, Ella Pyse, Grace McCoy, and Henrietta Wiebenga; four brothers, Falkert, John, William, and Albert Decker.
