BlakelynMuschBlakelyn Catherine Ann Musch, three-week-old daughter of Loren and Aubrey Musch, is in a Peoria Hospital, [likely OSF Children’s Hospital] facing surgery for Scimitar syndrome, which involves blood being misdirected from the lungs to the heart.

A viewer stated, “I think this would make a great story for our community.  They also need financial help and have started a GoFundMe account.”  Donations are at $310 of the $1000 requested. as of Tuesday, January 14, 2020.  On Thursday, January 9, Grandmother Valerie Carmela Coyomani, Organizer of the GoFundMe page, offered this update on Blakelyn’s condition.

“Her Ct came back and she needs her right lung removed, because is it is much smaller.  The vein that is supposed to go to the back of the heart, but i[which] s going to the bottom of the lung, isn’t long enough to be attached where it needs to.  At this point [doctors] don’t feel comfortable with treating her in Peoria.  So she will be transferred to another hospital that has seen more like her case.  She is also having a little bit harder time breathing, so they started her on a water pill and stopped her feeds.  If that doesn’t help, she will have to go back on the vent[ilator].#BlakelynStrong”

Editor’s note:  This description is the easiest to comprehend about this rare lung-heart condition.  “Scimitar syndrome is a congenital heart disease, characterized by an abnormal drainage of the right lung into the inferior vena cava, the right atrium, or a variety of venous connections from the anomalous pulmonary vein to a systemic vein.  This left-to-right shunt induces pulmonary hypertension and is an indication for surgical repair, in cases of…significant left-to-right shunting.  A corrective approach, which consists of rerouting the anomalous pulmonary flow to the left atrium, is usually performed.”

The family awaits information from Boston Children’s Hospital, about the acceptance of insurance coverage.
