The Annual K-12 Art Exhibit “Spring Into the Arts,” transformed Morrison Junior High, 300 Academic Drive, Morrison, IL, into a gallery and concert venue. Hundreds of student art pieces were professionally displayed, featuring a wide variety of media. Sponsored by Children’s Art Preservation Association (CAPA) and Morrison Community Unit School District #6 staff, this mass convergence of creativity took place Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The progression of visual arts skills–developed across all grade levels–validates the depth and quality of art instruction in District #6. Instructors are Stasha Willis (Northside and Southside Schools Art); Jamie Harmon (Junior High Art); Tony Wright (High School Art, Sculpture, Computer Graphics, Painting, and Drawing.)
In the top and bottom paintings at left, Kindergarten children demonstrate how to use a variety of lines: thick, thin, light, dark, round, straight, arched, and wavy. Note how creatively eighth graders used lines on faces in the same political cartoon.
Special music added to the enjoyment on Saturday morning. Twelve of 13 Fifth Grade Chorus members sang “Wide Open Spaces,” “Green,” “Ukulele,” and “Peace Like a River.” Left-to-right are James, Kendric, Ethan, Julia, Jenna, Maya, Brooklynn, Leslie, Sarah, Annabelle, Willow, and Emma. Their Music teacher is Samantha Scholl. At each 2018-2019 vocal and band concert, it is evident that she has systematically introduced new skills and slightly more complex music.
They played “Light Cavalry Overture” on red, yellow, white, and blue kazoos. Even the windows behind them had been transformed into a colorful, painted calendar. “Countdown to Summer” indicated the remaining days until school dismissal on June 4. On each day someone painted out the appropriate, descending numeral.
