August 17 Fair Winners and Bike Winners

Posted by

Throughout its final day, Saturday, August 17, 2019, the 149th Whiteside County Central Agricultural Society Fair continued to draw visitors, good weather (mostly), and plenty of excitement, even after 11:15 p.m. finale of the Demo Derby.  The Society was established in 1870; next year will be the sesquicentennial anniversary.  This fair was so successful with new and favorite attractions/food, it will be exciting to see how the Board tops themselves.

The fifth child to win a free bicycle was first grader Kaeden Miller, 6, from Morrison, IL.  He attends Northside School.  Kaeden has a bicycle and two helmets.  His mother, Melinda Miller, stated her son “rides on the sidewalks and sometimes streets with Grandma.”  The generous sponsor was Cornerstone Insurance Co. of Morrison.

The sixth youngster to win a free bike was fifth grader Jackson Tegeler, ten, from Port Byron, IL.   He has a bike, “but the brakes don’t work.”  He rides “throughout the neighborhood and to a friend’s house.”  Jackson has a helmet but does not wear it all the time.   The parents are Mitch and Jill Tegeler.  The generous sponsor was Community State Bank of Morrison.

Bike6JacksonTegelerDuring fair week, Bear Hollow Woodcarvers, based in French Lick, IN, use chain saws to create appealing specimens to adorn one’s residence, whether inside or out.  Joe Stebbing (shown in 2018 ) has enormous talent, eliciting figures out of a wood with an indelicate artistic tool.  The creations are attractive, but they also cause viewers to relate emotionally.  Stebbing’s 2019 completed pieces below illustrate the variety of wood, subject matter, and finish, as of Thursday, August 15.  Cherry and catalpa were popular woods to use.  At 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 17, effective and entertaining auctioneer David Damhoff, of Morrison, began selling Stebbing’s pieces to the public.  He repeatedly created a rousing, price-raising bidders’ war.  A feather sold for $125.  The cherry owl-on-a-branch sold for $470.  A catalpa wolf brought $410.  A cherry cactus and skull sold for $495.  Monies raised go to the Agricultural Society.  “We always do well at the auction,” stated a Board member.  The sponsor was Five Star Enterprises of Morrison.

Caleb Oostenryk is a mid-twenties Morrison man who likes bucking bulls.  For “at least six years, he has been on the circuit,” stated the announcer during Next-Level Bull Riding on Tuesday, August 13.  “He is a farmer and trucker.  He may take his fluffy bulls out to competitions.”  Riders pay $150 to compete on two bulls, trying to stay atop the powerful, rotating animals for eight long seconds.  100 points is a perfect score, determined by two judges on the ground.   Very few got close to the point total or time limit., but several lasted six seconds.  CCCheck Ranch, in Gays Mills, WI, supplies the event bucking bulls.  Below are a few of their herd.  Oostenryk has two relatives on the Fair Board:  Brian Oostenryk, Sr. and Brian, Jr.  Schuler Motors, Inc. was the sponsor.

Winners are listed for Fair Board Elections; Horseshoe Tournament; Open Sheep; Kids’ Tractor Pedal Pulls; Tractor and Truck Pull.

ELECTIONS OF WHITESIDE COUNTY FAIR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Four members of the Whiteside County Fair Board of Directors were elected to three-year terms on Saturday, the final day of this year’s run.  They were elected by ballots cast by exhibitors and season-ticket holders.  The elected Directors were:  Jon Brackemyer, Morrison; Todd Mickley, Morrison; John Mosher, Prophetstown; Brian Oostenryk, Jr., Morrison.  Thirteen Board members are shown at the presentation to honor Jill Miller as a Co-Friend of the Fair.  Left-to-right are John Mosher, Karl Kovarik, Brad Noble, Mary Beth Dombroski, honoree Jill Miller, Vice President Dan Heusinkveld, Brian Oostenryk, Jr., Mike Wiersema, Jon Brackemyer, President Paul Vock, Brian Oostenryk, Sr., Rob Vegter, John Wiersema, and Todd Mickley.  Miller had just completed a lap around the track on a Six Horse Hitch; Lori Hemmersbach, Westby, WI, drove the Percherons.

HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT

Under cloudy skies, the horseshoes clanked, beginning at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 17.  Eight pitchers gathered in the infield of the horse track for the 149th Annual Whiteside County Fair’s Horseshoe Tournament.  Each contestant played a round-robin match of five games.  The winner of Class A was considered the Champion.  The highest number of points decided all ties, except for Class A, in which case, this must be pitched off.  The rules of this tournament are governed by the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

 Class A:
1. Ken Schaver, Morrison; 2. Robert Schaver, Morrison; 3. Laverne Schroeder, Morrison

Class B:
1. Brody Fisher; 2. Roger Doering, Morrison; 3. Tim Fisher, Morrison

Class C:
1. Coleman Rude; 2. Kyle McDaniel; 3. Caleb McCaslin

Horseshoes is a sport for all ages.  Those ages 20 to 69 pitch at a distance of 40 feet; Elders ages 70 and older pitch 30 feet.  Two men throw per team.  They bring their horseshoes and, for a some, a hooked, metal rod with wood handle to pick them up.  Left-to-right after the tournament are 17-year-old Brody Fisher; Tim Fisher; Mike Wiedman; Roger Doering; Ron Hook; Laverne Schroeder; Bob Schaver; Ken Schaver.  Hook throws left-handed.  He wears a band around his left shorts leg, so the fabric does not interfere with his pitching arm.  However, none of the right-handed pitchers followed his idea.  Bob and Ken Schaver are in the Illinois Hall of Fame Pitchers and State Champions.  Over Labor Day weekend, some men who qualified will complete at the State Tournament in Casey, IL.  Arlene Schaver (Ken) is the record keeper.

PEDAL PULL 1

The first of two Kid’s Pedal Pulls helped kick-off the 149th Annual Whiteside County Fair, which opened Tuesday morning, August 13, for its five-day run.  Winners from a field of 82 competitors were thrilled at the end of some outstanding pulls.  The Pedal Pull excitement continued on Saturday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m.  Tyler Green, Morrison, left, looked determined; the lad at right did not.  Below, Sheriff John Booker posed with Remery Sandrock, to whom he gave a treat coupon for participating.
