The third youngster to win a bicycle was second grader Jewel Nelson, 7, from Carthage, IL. She is home schooled. Jewel has a working bicycle and helps with paper routes of her older siblings. However her bikes have always been hand-me-downs. “I have never had a new bike,” she said with a smile. She does not have a safety helmet. Her parents are Phillip and Laura Nelson. They manage the “Covered Wagon Almonds” stand, to assist friends who own the business. The family attends “a few fairs, about a half dozen,” stated Phillip Nelson. He made grandstand attendees very happy by tossing bags of flavored nuts into the crowd. The generous sponsor was Barb Kophamer Re/Max Sauk Valley, Morrison, IL. Fair Board Vice President Dan Heusinkveld shared Jewel’s happy moment. He is Director of Horse Racing and has been a Board member 42 years, having joined in 1977.
Annually, the 4:00 p.m. crowd-pleasing Pie and Cake Walk is offered Wednesday through Friday of Fair Week. Pictured are attendees from Thursday, August 15, and Friday, August 16, respectively. All ages enjoy this game of chance. The procedure is simple: stand on a numbered circle; put your quarters on the glass counter top; wait for the random drawing of numbered ping-pong balls. If yours is called, loudly indicate that; you receive a paper ticket to exchange for your choice of a baked confection. When all desserts have been claimed, winners select a large, hanging basket grown by K & R Greenhouse in Morrison. Tips for new players, like the Editor, include: have a friend or the person beside your number place a foot on it, while you quickly go the the dessert table. If not, someone might move onto your spot, or you might lose having a variety of food or plant options. The Editor began with $6 in quarters, but she spent less than $4 and enjoyed beginner’s good fortune. Sheriff John Booker drew her number 50 three times.
Three generations of Friday winners are shown left-to-right. Fourth grader Alex Malone, 9, holds a Triple Berry Pie. Sixth grader Zoey Webb, 11, selected Rice Krispie Treats. Morrison Grandmother Jenny Webb holds chocolate chip cookies won by ninth grader Noah Webb, 14, who also won a chocolate layer cake. Mother Sharon Webb said, “He has a $3 budget, and he usually wins.” Sharon Webb and her children live in Clinton, IA.
Exciting grandstand entertainment began at 7:00 p.m. with Solution Action Sports stunt riders, featuring the FMX (freestyle motocross) Contest Series. Bikes launched from a ramp, performed acrobatic maneuvers in a 75′ span of air, and landed on another ramp. These talented, agile motorbikers flew so high! Judges, left-to-right, are Sheriff John Booker, Christie Wiersema, and Cade Kovarik. Five riders each needed six jumps to qualify. They performed two stunts in the Best Trick Contest, and tricks escalated in difficulty.
Winners are listed for Junior Dairy, Open Dairy, Open Poultry, and Open Western Horses.
On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, Hannah Linder’s Holstein cow, “Lois,” (named after Lois Conrady) delivered a calf at the Whiteside County Fair. The public chose the name Liberty for the Summer Yearling Heifer. Exactly a year later, Liberty returned to the fair with five other Linder calves, aged less than three months to 1.5 year old, to be judged on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. White-legged Liberty stands with Linder. The Linders are long-time Holstein breeders of cows who produce up to 40 gallons of milk a day. Hannah earned 11 first, two second, and one third place in the Junior Dairy Show. In the Open Dairy Show father Kent Linder and Hannah earned five first, seven second, and six third placings. Liberty earned her first blue ribbon; the judge stated she “was very silky.” This May, Hannah received the Katie Zuidema Memorial Scholarship. It is traditional, Linder stated, to name a calf with the same first letter as her mother, but that would be amended this year. The two-and-a-half-month-old Summer Yearling is named Katie, to honor the late Katie Zuidema. Hannah registered this week at Sauk Valley College, Dixon, IL.
Dawn Arians, daughter Jessie, and her son met the tribute calf on Saturday, August 17.
Dawn Young’s Morrison granddaughters petted little Katie. From tallest-to-shortest are the Young youngsters, Faith, 8, Jadah, 6, and Ariah, 3.

Displayed in the Poultry Barn are posters of 145 Standard, Bantam, and Standard Crested Breeds, showing both sexes, chicks, and eggs. These birds entered in the WCF Poultry Show were beautifully varied in color shape, and feathering (even those which were molting.) The show was judged by Phil Bartz of Murrayville, IL, on Tuesday, August 13, beginning at 10:00 a.m. It took a considerable while to evaluate almost 340 chickens–which nearly doubled last year’s entry–and new entries of ducks and geese. Bartz has judged for “a long time” and received his license in 2001. He started showing poultry in 1977 with 4-H. Besides Illinois, he has judged in Florida, California, North Carolina, and Canada; next month he has “four shows in a row in Ontario, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri.” “The rare stuff is what he raises–Dorkings and Hamburgs [ both] Golden and Silver Pencilled.” While judging, he noted these are “nice birds, good quality” and acknowledged his “wonderful, young, eager assistant Dean Deaver” of Milledgeville, IL. Deaver raises fluffy White Silkies and shiny Black Cochins.
