Woodlawn Arts Academy’s fall lineup is a great mix of new events and activities with returning favorites. Registration is now available for lessons, workshops, and classes that run through May 2019.
The Academy will host a bus trip to Chicago on Saturday, October 13, 2018, to see Broadway in Chicago’s musical theatre production of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.” Tickets are $100 per person, which includes a show ticket, transportation, and driver tip. Departure will be at 8:30 a.m. from the Woodlawn Arts Academy farmhouse parking lot. Pickup at Dixon, IL, Walmart may also be available; interested parties should call 815-626-4278. Participants will have time for lunch and shopping in downtown Chicago before the show, and we will stop for dinner on the way back to Woodlawn. Seating is limited, so be sure to register now.
New this year is Exploration Art School, a school-year-long, mixed-media, visual arts program. During each of four sessions, students will learn a fundamental art concept, work on projects with three guest teachers, and learn about displaying, framing, and finishing their artwork. Student art will be exhibited at the end of November and May, so family, friends, and the community can attend and support the young artists.
“With many schools no longer offering visual arts classes, we want to give students the opportunity to explore different mediums of art,” said Becky Rich, the Academy’s Program Coordinator. “We hope to help the students build self-confidence, plus a lifelong respect and appreciation of art. This is something they can do for a hobby or career for the rest of their lives.”
Exploration Art School classes are available for students in first-through-fourth grades, and fifth-through-eighth grades. Register by calling 815-626-4278, online at woodlawnartsacademy.com, or in person at Woodlawn Arts Academy. Discounts are available for those who register for all four sessions of the program. Additionally, the Academy is a partner agency of United Way of Whiteside and Lee Counties, and financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Download an application from the Academy’s website or pick one up in the main office.
Beginner-level, project-based woodworking classes are available year-round at Woodlawn Woodshop. Participants will make items ranging from small indoor pieces like a picture frame or pen and pencil set, to larger outdoor items such as a folding picnic table/bench and potting bench. Visit the Academy’s website, woodlawnartsacademy.com, for details on all the woodworking classes being offered.
As always, lessons, classes, and workshops are also available for dance, music, culinary arts, and theatre. Visit woodlawnartsacademy.com to view all workshops and classes and to download the 2018-19 Arts Program Guide. Registration is available online (not all programs are eligible for online registration), by calling 815-626-4278, or by visiting the Academy during regular business hours. Registration is due one week (two weeks for woodshop programs) prior to the start of a program.
