Alvin D. “AL” Shawver, 95, of 2006 Terrace Lane, Morrison, IL, died Sunday, March 17, 2019, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.
Al was born October 13, 1923, in Kansas City, MO. His parents were Harvey L. and Illafay (Horning) Shawver. Al was educated in the Morrison grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School. On March 12, 1948, he married Winnifred D. “Cookee” Onken in Morrison. Al was a veteran and served in the U. S. Navy as a Yeoman 2nd Class during WWII. He was honored Memorial Day 2018 as the oldest surviving veteran in Morrison. In 1955 Al, along with his parents and Bob Kingery, purchased the Whiteside Sentinel and merged it with the Whiteside County News to form the WNS Publications. Al was a member and Past President of the Morrison Lions Club and also a member of the Rotary Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morrison. Al was an avid tennis player and golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Cookee, of Morrison; two daughters, Darcy (John) Houseman of Morrison and Robin Vande Zande of Kent, OH; five grandchildren, Scott Houseman, Leigh (Mitch) Milnes, Lauren (Jeff) Warnock, Evan (Ryan) Deady, and David Vande Zande; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandchild, Kevin Houseman.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
There will be a memorial visitation at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 13, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church., Morrison, IL.
A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Dr. Michael Selburg officiating.
Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL.
The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
