Bring coloring books, crayons, coloring pens and pencils and enjoy the relaxation of coloring! Odell Public Library will host a night of adult coloring, a craze that has hit the Nation, on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
There has been an explosive popularity of adult coloring books. This traditional child’s activity has been adopted by growing numbers of grownups, who find that coloring imparts a meditative sense of calmness. This evening of coloring is a continuation of the “Calming the Mind” series, presented by Odell Public Library Friends.
“Adult coloring is one of the fastest-growing categories that we have,” stated the Vice President of Barnes and Noble. Three of the top-selling books at Amazon are adult coloring books. A drawing entitled “The Secret Garden” is credited with igniting the boom, when it was published in 2013. That drawing was followed by “The Enchanted Forest.” Together these two adult coloring books have sold 13 million copies!
There are several other popular coloring motifs. Plaids, flowers, and symbols called mandalas are easily found. A mandala is a symbol representing self. “A study found that coloring a mandala or plaid design for 20 minutes decreased anxiety.” (Chicago Tribune)
“Coloring is a welcome relief. We have so much going on all the time; it’s nice to be quiet and mindful,” said Sister Melanie Paradis.
Coloring pages, gel pens, and colored pencils will be available, although you may bring your own book and colors. Hot drinks and cookies will accompany the relaxing evening. There is no cost.
“Come and enjoy something a little different. Who knows? You may become ‘hooked’ on coloring,” stated Anne Frame.
