There’s something new to love at your library beginning Monday, February 27, 2017. Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, is excited to announce the addition of a kitchen center to the children’s area. Three-year-old kitchen test volunteers are Cora Rider, left, and Muira Layne
It’s no secret that children learn through play. Numerous studies have shown that play helps children develop early literacy and school-readiness skills, ranging from print awareness to narrative skills. Purposeful imaginative play, like pretending to be a chef in a kitchen, can teach kids sorting, narrative, and communication skills, as well as sharing. The play center also encourages “clean up” skills–important both at home and at school.
Odell believes having play opportunities outside of the home is important for children and caregivers. Play at the library encourages social interaction among our young learners and provides caregivers a chance to meet other caregivers in our community. Not only is it a great excuse to get out of the house and meet new friends, it also fosters a life-long love and comfort with libraries and reading. Parents and children using the play area are encouraged to take a break from play to share a book or check out a stack to share at home.
The Odell play kitchen is intended for children aged seven and younger and their caregivers, who are required to stay in the children’s area during play. Youngsters are encouraged to explore and prepare a wide variety of foods, or they may select staff-created activity cards for guided play. The play kitchen will be open during regular library hours and will close ten minutes prior to library closing time, to allow for cleanup.
Odell’s play kitchen would not have been possible without the generosity of several local organizations. Many thanks to our friends at Morrison Community Preschool for their generous donation of the kitchen units and to the Odell Public Library Friends for supplying a variety of play food items, a new rug, aprons, and a picnic table for the kids. Odell loves being part of such a supportive and giving community.
