On 3/5/16 at about 11:42 p.m., Whiteside County Sheriff Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Round Grove Road and Hazel Road, rural Morrison, IL. Investigation revealed a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Payton J. Cook, 17, of Morrison, was traveling southbound on Round Grove Road, when he lost control and skidded sideways into the east ditch. The vehicle went airborne, striking a utility pole, and rolled, coming to rest in a field on its side.
Payton was pronounced dead on scene by Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald.
Two passengers were in the vehicle. Brooklyn F. Gallentine, 18, of Morrison, was transported to CGH Medical Center,Sterling, IL, where she was treated and released. A 16-year-old male was extricated and airlifted to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, IL.
Deputies were assisted on scene by the Illinois State Police, Morrison Fire and Ambulance, and CGH Ambulance.
The crash remains under investigation.
