The day we call Halloween derives its roots in Celtic Ireland, with the origin of carving turnips and lighting them with candles on doorsteps. The custom was exported to the United States, but gave way to carving pumpkins. It seems Americans never found holiday pleasure in turnips!
Celebrate “All Hallows Day” day at Donnybrook Bakery Café, 203 W. Main Street, Morrison, IL, on Saturday, October 31, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Lunch begins at 11:00 a.m. Turnips are not on the menu, but enjoy any of these Donnybrook favorites:
- Chicken and Buttermilk Biscuits (chicken pot pie)
- homemade gluten-free Chili and Corn Bread
- Donnybrook (corned beef panini-style sandwich) with cole slaw or potato salad, pickle, and chips
- Chicken Salad sandwich on Cranberry-Oat bread
- a warm dish of Apple Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream
- items from the bakery.
“Baking items will be a treat!” stated owner Bob Vaughn. “We’ll begin the fall season with delicious Cranberry Pecan Scones; wonderful pumpkin Doughnut Puffs, sprinkled with powdered sugar; Chocolate Chip Halloween cookies.”
Other baked goods include:
- chocolate chip and apricot-white chocolate chip scones
- cinnamon rolls
- cranberry-orange muffins.
Vaughn added, “Drinks will be plentiful–both non-alcoholic as well as those for people who wish to imbibe. Just for this day, try a variation of our popular Irish Coffee, an orange-tinted, ‘All Hallows Irish Coffee’ with the finest Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey.”
Enjoy a ball game in either of two rooms while trying “our seasonal craft beers, including the newest Stella Cider. Additional new, seasonal craft beers include four ‘Lagunitas’ manufactured in Chicago, IL.” Other choices and wines are available.
“It is the final day for our Spooky Spicy Dark Chocolate Mocha; Ghostly, Pumpkin Pie Mocha; Jack-o-Lantern Latte,” he concluded.
