Joe was born August 27, 1918, in Garden Plain, IL, to Jacob and Grace (VanZuiden) Wilkens. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools. On January 20, 1942, he married Florence M. Post, in Fulton, IL. Joe farmed in the Garden Plain area of rural Fulton for 32 years. He moved into Fulton in 1973. Joe was a former member of First Reformed Church in Fulton. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; one daughter, Judy (Dave) Wiersema of Fulton; one son, Ron (Linda) Wilkens of Morrison; four grandchildren, Scott (Erika Boostrom) Wiersema, Shelley Wiersema, Lori (Bill) Hutchison, Jeff (Chris) Wilkens; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Wilkens of Fulton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Corneil Wilkens, John Wilkens, Wilbert Wilkens, and one in infancy; one sister, in infancy.

FUNERAL SERVICE:  1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home

OFFICIATING:  Ken Renkes, Director of Congregational Care at Ebenezer Reformed Church

VISITATION:  11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2015, until the time of the service, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home

INTERMENT:  Fulton Township Cemetery, Fulton, IL

Memorials have been established to Windsor Manor of Morrison, IL, and Unity Christian School of Fulton, IL.
