William R. “Bill” Borum finds himself at the end of a list of 20 Morrison, IL, Postmasters, stretching back to the first one, Martin V. B. Smith, who was appointed on March 10, 1896.
Borum was officially appointed to the Morrison position on Saturday, November 17, 2012, with an installation ceremony occuring on Tuesday, December 4.
The Des Moines, IA, District Office chooses the Postmaster. Seven former and current Postmasters attendend the installation–including two who served Morrison, Thomas W. Mulholland and Richard Springer–and Borum’s mother-in-law.
He started his career as a part-time flexible employee at the Byron, IL, Post Office in October 1955. He transferred to the Morrison PO; carried mail for a year; moved to the Rock Falls, IL, office, where he served as a clerk for nine years.
Tampico, IL, was his first Postmaster job, being appointed in August 2008. In July 2012, Borum became Postmaster of Prophetstown, IL, but soon received this Morrison postion after the untimely death of Albert Lopez on September 12.
The new Postmaster resides in Sterling, IL, with wife Tami and four daughters: Jailyn, 14; Josilyn, 11; Breelyn and Brooklyn, nine-year-old twins.
He comes from a postal family. His father, Bill Borum, carried mail for 42 years in Sterling. His mother-in-law, Camella Alexander, served as Postmaster in Milledgeville, IL.
Borum has plans for small, internal changes which customers will not notice. He is “working on a couple things.”
“We’re always changing. We have great flat-rate priority boxes and services,” he commented.
During the interview, Borum smoothly made his first official decision. He allowed two clerks to switch work days that week.
