Hitchcock Thriller “North by Northwest” March 10

nBYnwAlfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful classic “North by Northwest” starring Cary Grant will hit the big screen at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, in Morrison, IL, on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.  Movie time is 2:00 p.m. in the Program Room.  The film is one of the most entertaining movies ever made and one of Hitchcock’s most famous stories.

Filmed in 1959, the film is a quick-paced espionage thriller, with Eva Marie Saint and James Mason rounding out the movie with Cary Grant.  Grant is a New York Madison Avenue executive dressed in a gray flannel suit, named Roger Thornhill, in the world of advertising.  He is a man sheltered by his wealth and prestige.

Through mistaken identity, Thornhill is abducted and accused of being a Government undercover Federal agent by a group of foreign spies.  After being framed for the murder of a United Nations official, he goes on the run!  Spies, the police, and the FBI pursue him across part of the United States.  He is then forced to assume another man’s identity:  George Kaplan, a non-existent U. S. agent.  The film is filled with mayhem, spies, counterspies, a domineering and unbelieving mother, and a mysterious, beautiful blonde.  In one of the most classic endings, Cary Grant is seen on the face of Mount Rushmore.

“Cary Grant, a veteran member of the Hitchcock acting variety, is never more at home than in this role of the advertising man on the lam.  He handles the surprised look, the quick smile, and all the suspense with his usual grace.  ‘North by Northwest’ is a colorful and exciting route for spies, counterspies, and lovers.  Hitchcock is at his best.”  (The New York Times)

There is no charge for this afternoon of fun and suspense, although donations are appreciated.  Free popcorn and a drink will be available.  See you at the movies!
