Marc Adami stated, “We will read and discuss a book on ‘how to live a good life’ and hope the public is interested in both the topic and the book.  Request a copy from Odell Public Library.”

The Whiteside Forum will host a book discussion of Breakfast with Seneca:  A Stoic Guide to the Art of Living, by David Fideler, on Sunday February 23, 2025.  The introduction and discussion will be led by Dr. Jessica Rosien, Professor from St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA.

Dr. Roisen regularly teaches Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Conflict Analysis for the Philosophy Department.  She is a certified mediator.  In addition to philosophy, Dr. Roisen also teaches courses on equity and ethics for the Master of Public Health program.  She has particular interest in justice and peace issues.  Her classes are oriented around providing practical applications of theoretical concepts.

Our book is described as the first, clear, and faithful guide to the timeless, practical teachings of the Stoic philosopher Seneca.  Stoicism, the most influential philosophy of the Roman Empire, offers refreshingly modern ways to strengthen our inner character, in the face of an unpredictable world.  Widely recognized as the most talented and humane writer of the Stoic tradition, Seneca teaches us to live with freedom and purpose.  His most enduring work, over a hundred “Letters from a Stoic” written to a close friend, explains how to
• handle adversity
• overcome grief, anxiety, and anger
• transform setbacks into opportunities for growth
• recognize the true nature of friendship.

The Whiteside Forum will host this book discussion on Sunday, February 23, 2025, in the City of Morrison Community Room of Odell Public Library, starting at 2:00 p.m.  The library is located at 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.  All Forum events are free and open to the public.  Please join us!
