Superintendent Addresses Music Program Concerns

MCUD #6 Staff, Parents, and Guardians:

On Friday, February 9, 2024, an online petition was circulated with the premise that the Board of Education was contemplating the elimination of the K-5 Fine Arts program. At this time the Board of Education has NOT discussed the possibility of eliminating that program.

Like many School Districts in Illinois, MCUD $#6 is in a position where finances and fiscal responsibility are more important than ever. Our District is also beginning to feel the crunch of the Statewide Teacher shortage, and a dramatic decrease in qualified applicants for many of our programs, including Fine Arts. The Board of Education is committed to providing a high quality educational experience for our students and recognizes that a Fine Arts program can be a valuable part of that program.

Unfortunately, navigating the issues mentioned above can have unintended consequences, as we saw this past year, when we were unable to find a qualified candidate to lead the K-5 Music program. As the District looks at staffing, budgeting, and planning for next year, the Board will take into consideration all relevant factors before making a decision.

Sincerely,

Scott Vance, Superintendent
