Morrison, IL, Junior High Wrestlers took to the mats at the Kevin Powers Invite at West Carroll, on Saturday, January 27, 2024. It was a great showing for this group of competitors! They saw 15-of-24 wrestlers bring home a medal; crowned five champions; the team earned a Second Place trophy.
This year’s squad is a mix of seasoned veterans and newcomers. The tournament provided a great opportunity for some mat time and for the new wrestlers to find some success.
The marquee match-up of the tournament featured two returning State Medalists, Uryah Wright of Morrison and Hudson Price of Fulton, IL. These two met four times last season with Wright holding a 3-0 record, versus his rival during the season, but it was Price who beat Wright in overtime at the State Tournament a year ago. The two finished fourth and fifth in their State brackets last year. Wright scored the first takedown. He dominated the match, scoring three more takedowns and some back points, on his way to a 10-2 major decision.
Other standout Colt wrestlers included Landon Rubright, who won his first Middle School tournament. Ethan Bush earned a tournament title in his first year of wrestling. Cael Wright and Eli Modglin rounded out the champions, dominating their brackets en route to titles.
The Colts will wrestle Thursday, February 1, at Fulton High School, 1207 12th Street, in Fulton, IL, versus Fulton and Lena-Winslow. Wrestling starts at 4:00 p.m.
