Maple Leaves and Gift Bags Benefit Food Pantry

Our City is blessed with magnificent maple trees along streets and in yards of its residents.

They are one of the earliest trees to send forth welcoming, spring leaves and the earliest to transform those leaves into rich, autumn colors.

The public has an opportunity to transform paper maples into genuine generousity for more than 80 families that depend on the Morrison Friends Food Pantry.

Sullivan’s Foods, 300 N. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, has begun a promotion to “help Morrison families this holiday season.  Buy a leaf…for $1, and we will donate it to the Morrison [Friends] Food Pantry,” stated Assistant Manager Jeramie Reatherford.

Reatherford’s good ideas are worth repeating.  In 2010, he devised a simple way to help the community to benefit the Morrison Friends Food Pantry.  The Sullivan’s Foods staff pre-filled brown grocery bags with pasta, canned goods, boxed items, and non-perishables, sealing them for easy transport.

“The items create quick and easy meals,” explained Reatherford.

Customers purchased one or more bags, and they were gathered for pick-up by Food Pantry volunteers.  Gift bags cost $5, $10, and $20–but the items inside total more.

This year, bags of toiletries will also be created.  Such necessary items are not available for purchase with Food Stamps.

Bags will be presented to MFFP volunteers, during the Holiday Open House at Sullivan’s Foods, on Saturday, November 17, 2012.

To quote Martha Stewart, “It’s a good thing.”  If you agree, stop at the store soon and buy a bag.
