The second name drawn for a free bicycle, on Friday, August 15, 2014, belonged to lucky Rina Feldman, 12, of Sterling, IL. She was pleased, because–although she has a bike–it is old. Her new wheels were donated by Joel M. Downie, CPA, 907 W. Route 30, Rock Falls, IL. Rina was unsure what she would do with her old bicycle.
Zach Harridge has worked in the Culinary Department for five years. He and his father have a total of 20 years of experience in this yummy department, which includes the popular Cake and Pie Walks on Tuesday through Friday of the fair. Harridge explained that local judges are chosen from the food industry. The Culinary Department awards the largest single award at the fair, a $50 scholarship in honor of Beulah Milnes. This year’s winner was Molly Jacobs of Sterling.
Fair Board member Karl Kovarik made a grown man tear up, as he cited nearly forty years of consummate commitment to the Whiteside County Fair by two “Friend of the Fair” recipients: Dan Heusinkveld and Paul Vock. The former is Superintendent of the Harness Racing Departments, which has been a part of the fair for all 144 years. Vock is Board President and Superintendent of Security. He spearheaded multiple projects, cquality entertainment, and beautification efforts, such as repainting the Round Barn. Each had several family members in attendance on the track before the grandstand for the 6:20 p.m. recognition ceremony. Kovarik paid tribute to them, too, as their lives have been entwined with the service of Vock and Heusinkveld for 36 years apiece. The men received a commemorative plaque.
Shown left-to-right are Fair Board members Todd Mickley; John Mosher; Marty Pierceson; Glenn Frank; (back row) Brian Oostenryk; Mary Beth Dombroski; Rob Vegter; Heusinkveld; Mike Wiersema; Vock; Howard Scott; Kovarik; Brad Noble.
After the award ceremony, the Tractor and Truck Pull–with the vehicle order reversed–took over the infield. Illini State Pullers (ISP) were in charge of this “muscle” weight dragging sport. The sponsor of this event was Pioneer/Land O’ Lakes; $7450 in premiums were offered to three truck and three tractor classes. Below are the end of runs by Ian Geiger, left, and Chris Geiger of Sterling.
Listed are award winners in these Departments: Junior Beef, Heavy Horses, Open Sheep, and Open Floriculture. All entrants are from Illinois unless noted.
