Morrison Community Unit District #6 is proud to announce the approval of a one-to-one technology/learning initiative. This program will put an iPad in the hands of every student in Pre-K through Grade 2 and a Google Chromebook in the hands of every student in Grades 3-12.
With the ever-changing climate of the technological world, the District recognized a need to increase the amount of technology students are using in the classroom, in order to prepare students for skills they will need in the future.
To pay for the initiative, the District will use money it saved from the refinancing of bonds. Such monies can only be used in capital outlay projects, not for salaries, benefits, or other instructional expenses. It was determined that money saved should be “invested” in the enrichment of the students’ education and into a one-to-one initiative.
Over the last three years, the District has been actively increasing the amount of technology in the classrooms, and we have seen great success. Multiple teachers have had access to technology that allowed them to enrich their curriculum and engage students on a new level. With the foundation of technology integration laid over the last three years, the District developed a technology committee, comprised of a diverse group of teachers, with all grade level buildings represented. The committee worked very hard, meeting regularly and researching all possible avenues the District could pursue–while being financially responsible-to implement the one-to-one initiative.
At the Monday, November 25, 2013, School Board meeting, tmembers unanimously passed a plan, recommended by the technology committee, to purchase Google Chromebooks for grades 3-12 and to keep the existing iPads in the lower-elementary grades PreK-2.
Additionally, students will have access to multiple technological platforms in all of the buildings: iPad carts will be available for teacher’s to check out in the Southside and High School buildings. Apple iMac and Macbook computer labs will be available at both the Junior High and High School. This diversification of technology will allow the students to have a unique technological learning experience.
This initiative will continue to push Morrison to the forefront of education innovation. Motivated District staff will use these classroom devices to enhance great teaching that is being done across all grade levels. Additionally, State Government will require new, online testing to be completed at grades 3 through 12. This will require students to have access to reliable technology–making the initiative a valuable and necessary resource.
Morrison Unit School District #6 is very excited to announce this initiative. It will spur schools to provide enriched, differentiated, and innovative instruction to all students. We invite parents/guardians of students to attend one-of-two Technology Information Meetings on
- Wednesday, August 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (meeting 5:00 to 5:30; Chromebook distribution until 7:00)
- Thursday, August 14, during the 5:00 p.m. meeting, as part of MHS Opening Night, in the high school auditorium.
District staff will go over the Chromebook policy handbook, explaining procedures and plans in more depth. If students in grades 6-12 attend either meeting with a parent/guardian, they will be able to pick up their Chromebook and take it home, as long as all appropriate paperwork has been submitted to the office.
