C. E. “Nip” Hartman, 78, of Morrison, IL, died Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling, IL.
Nip was born April 26, 1944, in Morrison, to Harry and Edith (Gerdes) Hartman and was a 1962 graduate of Chadwick High School.
Nip served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict, where he was highly regarded for his acts of heroism. His time in the Army took him to Vietnam and Germany. Despite his medals and awards earned during his service, he humbly did not share his accolades with others.
After his service in the Army, he began work at Northwestern Steel and Wire as a Guard and later became a member of Morrison American Legion Post #328. He had many passions throughout his life, including watching old cowboy movies, owning racehorses, acquiring random collectibles, and smoking his pipe. Above all, he loved the time he spent with his family and friends.
Nip was a quiet, humble man who had a laugh that brought light to every room he entered. He was known for being quite stubborn and strong-willed, but he would go out of his way to help others and expect nothing in return. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (John) Roush of Rock Falls, IL; sons, Steve (Deb) Hartman of New Windsor, NY, Kevin (Marsha) Hartman of Mulvane, KS, Lane Smith of Rock Falls, IL, and Scott (Amy) Hartman of Lake Zurich, IL; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Chuck Hartman.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
His Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with Rev. Daniel Behmlander, Pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rock Falls, IL, officiating.
A memorial Visitation will precede the service starting at 11:00 a.m., until the start of the service.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Interment will be at Chadwick Cemetery in Chadwick, IL.
A memorial benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project has been established.
