Letter from a Concerned Citizen

The Morrison City Council met last night[, Monday, May 23, 2022,] in another show of incompetence. A reminder given in Public Comment, again asking for ball park Profit and Loss statements, was left unaddressed. After months, yet in reality years, of unaccounted mismanagement of the ballpark, it is time for the City to fix the park’s issues once and for all. Since its conception, we should have learned [that] kicking the problem down the road won’t fix it. Funding a professional County Park District is looking better every day. Pulling the park away from the City and its Council seems the only road to getting things done.

A group of City activists–called that, because they are actively trying to make the City interesting and attractive–were stopped at the gate, as they tried to establish a temporary art sculpture exhibit, within the borders of our downtown. This group should be commended, [because] they continued to address the willy-nilly demands of certain Council members, only to learn that these same Council members never had an intention of allowing this project to go forward. Even [with] proposed [minimal] City monies going into these activities, tonight’s Council voted it down. I think the Council needs to be reminded that they are serving their Wards and not their own opinions. You only have to look at the success of Paint the Town, to see how the community has supported the arts, to know that this is something the community as a whole supports. Personally, for me, this event has drawn back three generations of my family to town, to participate in the Harvest Hammer and painting squares.

As a taxpayer, we deserve a Council that will work energetically at building a better community and prosperous region. These past months I [have] seen nothing that would lead me to believe our current leadership has what it takes to work in this direction. Perhaps–as we saw tonight, when the Council moved to double their pay the next term–we can expect our elected Council members to actually earn their keep.
